A History of Christmas Crackers
By Craig Lind Christmas without a cracker? It’s almost unimaginable for many in the U.K.! Like so many of the traditions that we hold over the festive season, Christmas Crackers were first invented during the Victorian period. And, by all accounts, Queen Victoria derived much amusement from them. We usually look to Germany, and the influence of Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband, to find the origin of many of the things that we associate with modern Christmas celebrations—the tree, the presents, the carols—all stem from Albert’s influence and the Victorian trend of following the Royals lead in very many things. Fun Things to Do in Seville with Kids to Beat the Heat
Seville, or Sevilla, was the highlight of our family’s two-week trip to Spain. With just two days in Seville, we didn’t have a lot of time in the city, so we picked a few highlights of the best things to do in Seville with kids. The new Gawker survived just about a year and a half before Bryan Goldberg, the CEO of BDG, announced on Wednesday that it will be shut down — er, it’s “suspending operations” — amid broader layoffs of 8% of the company’s staff. “We are proud of the site that Leah [Finnegan] and her team built,” Goldberg wrote in an email to employees that was tweeted by Semafor’s Max Tani. “Gawker published a lot of brilliant pieces in these nearly two years. But in this new reality, we have to prioritize our better monetized sites.” In an email to employees, Bustle Digital...
